Bioenergy is increasingly used as an alternative to fossil fuels. It preserves natural resources and helps to reduce harmful emissions. However, before biomass (e.g. wood, straw, maize, rapeseed or biogenic waste) can be used as fuel, electricity or heat it must be converted using a succession of different technologies.
